This may sound stupid but is it possible to change the Operating System on a computer ?

Im searching through websites to find a laptop for me to buy. However, literally almost every single laptop has either %26quot;Windows Vista Home Premium%26quot; or %26quot;Windows Vista Home Basic%26quot; as its operating system.

For my laptop, i would like to use Windows XP. Is it possible for me to change the operating system on the laptop from Vista to XP? (I dont want instructions on how to do this, i just want to know if i can)This may sound stupid but is it possible to change the Operating System on a computer ?

You can change to XP if you want to go to the expense and if you can find a legitimate copy for sale. Support ends for XP in 2014, if I remember right, so it probably isn't a good idea at this point. I'm pretty sure none of the major computer manufacturers are supplying XP as an option any more. Also, your install CD or DVD may not work with a different computer as they are often keyed to specific models and brands.

For the most part Vista is very similar to XP except it can be a whole lot more annoying when doing various things. Get one of several books that cover Vista in detail and reset everything to a more XP type environment.

Also, wait a bit and Windows 7 or what ever they might be calling it now may be available instead of Vista. No doubt it will be even more of a memory and space hog than XP or Vista when it finally gets released.

Lastly, you could install any of several versions of Linux. If you don't need the Windows environment, you can pretty much do everything under Linux. Download any number of Live CD's to try various distributions of Linux without affecting your current operating system. If you aren't familiar with the Linux environment I would also suggest buying a big book that covers what ever distro you decide on. Some books may even come with a Live CD.

Currently the best choice really is Vista unless you can handle everything under Linux.
