How to change operating system and keep the old programs?

I have Windows XP x16 currently intalled on my desktop and it is having some problems with EVERYTHING! I have decided that I might as well use this opportunity to upgrade my OS to Windows XP x64. However, I don't want to delete the applications I have installed on x16. How can I do this? How to change operating system and keep the old programs?
1) You can't

2) make sure that your computer's hardware supports x64 before you buy it. Unless you're getting it illegally/for free, then by all means, you might as well try.How to change operating system and keep the old programs?
You could duel boot the system, just make a new partition and install the OS there. ^_^How to change operating system and keep the old programs?
Use an update version and reinstall. All your old info and programs will still be there. Just don't reformat your hard drive. How to change operating system and keep the old programs?
16 bit programs don't work on 64 bit operating systems so you are out of luck
