How do I change my operating system?

I want to change my vista to an ubuntu while maintaining all of my files. I have the ubuntu disk. I also have both a C drive and a D drive. I'm thinking of putting all of my files on one drive and then installing ubuntu onto the other. Does this sound like a good idea? How do I change my operating system?
Here is a article that might helpHow do I change my operating system?
wtf you thinking mitch you can't change your operating systemHow do I change my operating system?
No. You're rushing too much into things.

Use the Ubuntu disk as a live CD first and see if you like it.

Then you can set up a non-destructive dual-boot using Wubi (no partitioning involved):

Yes, you can install Linux on another partition and have both the operating systems. But it is not advisable to switch completely your os to Ubuntu. Are you sure all your data files can be executed in Linux? How do I change my operating system?
you can do that.

i dont know for sure about ubuntu but i think you can install it as a secondary operating system, that way you would have both vista and ubuntu and you will keep your files

its always best to format your drive all the way before installing a new operating system but it wouldnt hurt not to.

check to see if it is a NT based OS, if it is then you can install it along with vista and take out vista any time you want.
