Change operating system on laptop?

do you have to %26quot;wipe %26quot; the hard drive, and how to do that? how good is ubuntu vs windows ?Change operating system on laptop?
You don't have to reformat (or %26quot;wipe%26quot;) the hard drive as a separate step in order to install Ubuntu. The Ubuntu installer's default behavior is to use the entire hard drive to install Ubuntu.

Since you seem to be new to Ubuntu, though, I would suggest not installing it right away. If you do now, you may regret it later and want Windows back.

The best way to migrate to Ubuntu is slowly. Take these steps, in this order, and take your time with each one:

1. Use open source Windows software:

2. Install Ubuntu as a virtual OS inside Windows:

3. Install a dual-boot using Wubi:

4. Install Ubuntu completely erasing Windows:

It is best always best to perform a format on the harddrive and restore the OS fresh. If you have your restore CD's then you boot from the cd and start the restore. Backup all of your data before you begin. If your machine did not come with a restore CD then they may have a partition on the hard drive that allows you to hit a key sequence during boot to start the restore process. Ubuntu is not comparable to Windows but in some cases it does perform for what the user needs it for. If this is a home machine for just performing web surfing then ubuntu might be all you need. If you need this OS to be compatible with many software packages such as MS Office then you may need to do more research since ubuntu may not run what you need.Change operating system on laptop?
I'll try t get it as simple as it can be. :-)

I was a Windows user since childhood (let's say around 20 years). Ubuntu or Linux is good, but might not be the best for you. It really depends on what you are looking for. Let's say that you love games and want to keep playing with those astonishing just made up games. Then Ubuntu is not for you. The thing is that game company has not get in the wave yet.

Apart from that if you can search for answer by yourself, I mean go to forum like the one I reference in source, then you could possibly find a way to like it. If you just do internet stuff (facebook, myspace, googling stuff) , write homework, print them yourself, go for Linux system!

If you choose Ubuntu, go to ubuntuforum, you shure to get good help there... And who knows? Maybe you'll come across me a few times ;-)Change operating system on laptop?
No you do not have to wipe the hard drive.

You might want to look into dual booting with ubuntu if you are new to it. (Which is running two operating systems on the same hard drive)

As for how good is it compared to windows, it all depends on personal preference really, just try it out, do what you normally do on windows and see how it compares to on ubuntu, comparing speed, ease, convenience etc...
