Sounds like a pirate copy of Microsoft Windows. Here is how to tell:

There are plenty of ways to upgrade to Ubuntu - even without a CD drive!

Ubuntu comes with pretty much everything you need, and if there is something you need that isn't pre-install, then its a simply case of clicking %26quot;Add/Remove%26quot; and selecting from the list!

Hello Elric,

(ANS) If a disk is stuck in a CD drive unit I found a little trick that works!!

No.1 Take a close look at the front of the CD or DVD drive unit, on the front panel if you look closely you should spot a tiny (yes! very small indeed) hole. The hole is no bigger than the tip of a ball point pen nib. Take a pin or the end of a paper clip and push this into the tiny hole and this should force open the disk tray %26amp; CD disk thats been stuck. Reboot the machine once the disk is removed and the drive should be OK after that.

No.2 You can download a free copy Ubuntu Linux from the Canonical website

SEE: http://www.ubuntu.com

No.3 Download the Ubuntu ISO image file (its quite large I seem to recall about 700megs) and once downloaded you must burn this ISO file onto a CD disk.

No.4 The Ubuntu ISO image once burnt to a CD then becomes boot-able, You can even load Ubuntu from the CD disk without installing it. Meaning you can see what your getting BEFORE you install the Linux OS itself.

**YES! If you want to move away from Microsoft products due to cost, or being locked into EULA, etc, etc. You will need to reformat the hard disk drive and thus wipe any previous OS before installing Ubuntu Linux onto the system.

**In years gone by Linux didn't have as many viable major applications in contrast to Microsoft %26amp; Windows but that is almost no longer the case. There are many many more applications for Linux than ever before. Linux has much to recommend it as well as being almost free of costs in the financial sense.

Hope that helps?

Cant help on that one Elric...Im a muppet with computers....Ubunty Linux....sounds like a name for a Pole Dancer...lolHow does one change from a Microsoft operating system to another like Ubunty Linux?
If you go to the Canonical website you can order a free copy of Ubuntu to be posted to your home free of charge. Useful if you've only got dial up.

I prefer PCLinuxOS 2007 myself which is nicer (in my opinion) and everything works 'out of the box'.

I tried Fedora 8 too but that takes quite a lot of tweaking for my purposes, though it's fantastic when you've got it just right.

The other good thing about Linux is that there are no viruses for it so you don't need an av program running! How does one change from a Microsoft operating system to another like Ubunty Linux?
