DVD burning help: should i change my operating system, or just the program i am using?

i didnt have to pay much for an HP whose hardware includes more bells and whistles than any audio/video collector could ask for, but GOD VISTA IS TERRIBLE FOR MEDIA! there wasnt even a program for using the webcam my computer came with. needless to say i was loaded up with an extensive trove of useless media management progams. vista by some strange coincidence refuses to errorlesly run any media program that i throw at it except for vlc. of couse my coputer came with all that cyberlink garbage that does nothing but takes up space on my hard drive... so i fiddled around with powerdirector for hours trying to put together a dvd, only to find out that there isnt much freedom to the user. nero wont work because windows is terrible with compatibility. half of everything else is a scam. and macromedia is very sub-par with its advances in disc writing. is there anyhting out there worthwhile as a dvd authoring program? if not what can i do to set up my computer so that i can actually do something with the tons of avi and vob files i have. and tell me how windows media player still cant play an avi after all these years... GEEZ! can someone help me find a way to burn a dvd plz plz?DVD burning help: should i change my operating system, or just the program i am using?
