I have a computer that runs in Spanish and I want to change it to English, how do I do that?

I believe that the system was set up in Spanish. When I download updates I always ask for English, but it comes up in Spanish. I have looked at the options button in the task bar and it says it's in English, but it isn't!? Is there any way I can change the operating system to English without loosing all my programs and info?I have a computer that runs in Spanish and I want to change it to English, how do I do that?

there is an option in your computer (depending on what kind of computer u have) that changes the language on many things that includes downloads. you can change it by either changeing the language settings on your computer, inserting the language operating disks that usually come with your computer (might/might not have), or refresh your system therefore resetting your settings on your computer.

How to change an operating system files into normal file?

well i had stored some of my very precious photos in my pen drive and had no other copy of it. i gave it to one of my friends and i knew it had virus so told him not to use anti virus but he did. after that all my photos were changed into operating system files and that friend of mine uninstalled his anti virus so theres no way i can quarantine it.i have deleted all the virus infected files and now all the files are good but operating files.i have no other copy of those photos and i still have them in my pen drive.plssssss help me out..............i shall be really grateful to you for your helpHow to change an operating system files into normal file?
Pretty simple.

1. Plugin your USB drive

2. Open a command window. By Start-%26gt;Run cmd. Do the following in cmd prompt.

3. Type the drive name where your USB is loaded. say f: . So u need to do is f: and then hit Enter.

4. Change directory to the folder that contains the files. Say files are in pics directory. so do %26quot;cd pics%26quot; and hit Enter.

5.. Now do ren *.%26lt;OS File type%26gt; *.jpg

OS File type is the extension of the file. How to change an operating system files into normal file?
no, your pictures were just hidden, the virus replicate your photos and renamed its file extension. after you scan and disinfect your usb drive, let your computer %26quot;show all files%26quot; your photos would appear but somewhat transparent.Right click and go to properties where you can uncheck the %26quot;hidden%26quot; boxHow to change an operating system files into normal file?
Oo... Strange prob...

I hope the following method works...

1.Open your pen drive.

2.Choose Tools-%26gt; Folder Options -%26gt; View Tab

3.Uncheck %26quot;Hide Extension for Known File Types%26quot;

4. Click %26quot;ok%26quot;

5. Now right click a photo and select rename

6. Rename to Photo1.jpeg ( here you are changing the file type, since the photo is captured from cam, it usually is in jpeg format)

All de best.... Hope it works for u....

  • How can i change my operating system FROM vista to XP. (i have the xp disc)?

If you install xp on a computer that is built for vista you are downgrading your computer, and its time consuming finding the right sound card driversHow can i change my operating system FROM vista to XP. (i have the xp disc)?
You will have to reinstall. This will reformat the disk and wipe out everything, so back up your stuff first.

MS does make it possible to upgrade from XP to Vista, but they never wrote the downgrade program.

You could make a dual-boot system. This involves taking some of the free space on your hard drive (30Gb to be safe) and makes a separate logical disk to install Vista on. Then, when you boot, you will have the choice of which one to use.

This involves some surgery, and you still need to back up your stuff just in case. How can i change my operating system FROM vista to XP. (i have the xp disc)?
You can't just CHANGE it. You could format your harddisk and make a clean and fresh installation of XP. But keep in mind:

    - All your settings and files are lost after formatting, so make a backup first!

    - You could have problems to find XP device drivers for your hardware. Check it first!

Good luck! How can i change my operating system FROM vista to XP. (i have the xp disc)?
Back up all your files, and then insert the XP disc into the CD-ROM. There should pop up an option to install XP. You can also restart your computer with the XP cd inside, and reformat your computer from the BIOS. This will delete all of your data though. How can i change my operating system FROM vista to XP. (i have the xp disc)?
As with all Microsoft products you can not downgrade an OS. Format your hard drive and install XP but, remember that Microsoft support for XP will end in 2011.How can i change my operating system FROM vista to XP. (i have the xp disc)?
First thing you'll want to do is make sure your computer hardware has XP drivers available or else some of the important hardware will no longer work. like your video card, sound card, network card, etc...

Then the easiest way is to just format your hard drive:

Stick the XP disk in, boot to CD, delete the partition, quick format NTFS, and let it load a fresh copy.

Also make sure you have a valid XP cd key or it will not install.

oh yea if you have anything you'll want to keep, make sure you back it up first :o)How can i change my operating system FROM vista to XP. (i have the xp disc)?
Easy thing to do firstly make sure you have all the XP versions of your drivers for your hardware thats your soundcard, graphics card, motherboard drivers (things like chipset drivers, eithernet controller drivers etc) and any other hardware devices also back up all your stuff as you will reformat your hard drive losing everything on it

Simply put the XP disc in the drive and reboot the PC the PC should read the disc and ask you to press any key to boot from it, if it does not then you need to go to your BIOS and set the boot order and put CD/DVD drive first that way it will look at your drive first.

After that simply follow instructions and accpet the licence agreement then you would delete the vista partition (it will warn you that there is an OS on it but overide it) and simply create a new XP one then thats it it will format the disk and copy files over the whoel thing shoudl take about 40 miniutes to an hour to do

windows 98 was problematic when it was new stay with xp or go to win 2000. besides microsoft no longer offers any update support for 98. if it was my computer and i had a genuine copy of windows xp i'd stay with xp. because after using xp you'll hate 98.If i want to change my operating system from WIN XP to WIN 98,I don%26039;t have floppy drive?
One usually upgrades, not downgrades. You will have if you do go back to 98, you won't get much out of your computer programwise any more.

How do I change the operating system on my Red Fox Wizbook N1020i from Ubuntu to Windows?

I recently received a Red Fox Wizbook N1020i for Christmas, and when I started it up, turns out the operating system is Ubuntu, not Windows like I was expecting. I've been trying for hours now how to figure out how to work Ubuntu, but I'm getting tired of trying to find the applications I supposedly downloaded, and looking for ways to change the password for the keyring.

Now I've decided that, just to make my life easier (seeing as it doesn't look like I'll be getting the hang of Ubuntu any time soon), to just change the OS to Windows 7.

Since the Wizbook is a netbook, it doesn't have an optical drive. My brother said I could save Windows 7 onto a USB flashdisk using a different laptop and then use that to install Windows onto my netbook.

Could anyone give me the steps to doing this procedure? Thanks!

P.S. Please don't answer telling me that I just need to use my head with Ubuntu and that Windows will just make me lazy or brainless or something. I really want to use Windows. Thanks again :)How do I change the operating system on my Red Fox Wizbook N1020i from Ubuntu to Windows?
Purchase a copy of Windows 7

Find a computer with a disk drive

Insert the disk into the disk drive

Open the disk - do NOT run it

Copy thr files you see on the disk onto your flash drive (needs to be a 4GB flash drive)

Go back to your own computer

Insert the flash drive before turning on your computer

    Turn on your computer

Windows 7 SetUp should start automatically

If the %26quot;Press any key to boot from CD%26quot; dialog comes up, you do it only once.

Your computer will restart 2-3 times during SetUp with the dialog appearing each time. You only %26quot;press any key%26quot; prior to SetUp starting - not subsequentlyHow do I change the operating system on my Red Fox Wizbook N1020i from Ubuntu to Windows?

Is it possible to change a Generic Notebook Operating System to function as if it were a laptop or a pc?

I recently purchased a notebook on ebay %26amp; i'm noticing the operating system its running (windows CE 5.0) isn't all that good, so I was wondering if there was anyway to change the operating system to windows xp %26amp; up or perhaps even a Mac operating system. Will I have to hack it? If so, how would I go by doing that? Any information given will be helpful.

ThanksIs it possible to change a Generic Notebook Operating System to function as if it were a laptop or a pc?
Ouch. With a two GB hard drive and worse, 128mb of RAM, you're going to have a hard time with a more powerful operating system. Windows CE is mostly used on phones, and the hardware you're running is about the power many phones have in them, so it's appropriate.

Look your netbook over carefully and see if you can swap out the hard drive and ram for something bigger. If you can get the ram up to 512 mb and the hard drive (which is probably an SD card) up to 4 GB, you can run Ubuntu for Netbooks or XP home. XP home can technically run with your specs: it might be rather slow, but it's worth a try.

Edit: I checked the more detailed specs, and you can't turn that computer into a hackintosh. Only intel processors support the Mac OS.

Good luck!Is it possible to change a Generic Notebook Operating System to function as if it were a laptop or a pc?
It is easy, If you have the installation disk already, simply insert it into the disk drive then restart your computer. On the reboot, press either f10 or f11(It should say which on the screen somewhere) then select to run from disc or even install the new operating system.

I want to change my operating system... A little help?

My laptop (Asus F9Dc) came with Windows Vista 32- bit, the recovery dvd it had and it's driver only installs and supports Windows Vista.

A month ago, my laptop had a stupid virus, so I had to reformat it, and my friend recommended Windows 7.

I am using Windows 7 as my operating system now, and I really like it.

But I can't find drivers for my laptop, the built- in webcam, the hotkeys, everything.

So I've decided to switch back to Vista. I still have the recovery dvd and the driver. My questions are:

    1) How do I change my operating system?

    2) Will my files be deleted? Do I have to back them up? Is there a way to change my operating system without having to move my files and programs?

    Please help.

Thanks you very much in advance, and God bless!

    Cheers.

Your gonna need to do a clean install if your going to reinstall Windows Vista, so my advice is save any files you want to save or back up in the current windows 7 state. Then run the recovery disc, if your looking for any drivers this should be available at the ASUS website:

    http://support.asus.com/download/downloa

The direct link i've provided is for the Vista version, i couldn't find any drivers for Win7 OS, i would advised you contact ASUS tech support for that one. You can also make an inquiry at their website.

Good luck :)I want to change my operating system... A little help?
Check with Leo Laporte. He always seem to have great answers to technical questions or he can find someone who can answer your question. You can catch him on radio or on his website.

http://techguylabs.com/radio/pmwiki.phpI want to change my operating system... A little help?
Your Windows Vista drivers should be about 95% compatible with Windows 7, but they must be the same Windows Bit 32 or 64. Windows 7 is a total rewrite of Windows Vista and a direct replacement for Vista, done right, made better, a little faster and, a little more stable.

If you have the recovery CD for vista, boot the computer up with the DVD in the drive and it should start reinstalling your Vista. If you want to try the Vista drivers for Windows 7, get them from the manufacturer web site if your Windows 7 is 64bit. You will loose files if you use the recvery DVD so you need to save what you can, before you do it.

If the computer was manufactured before Febuary of this year

then go for it, otherwise check with the manufacturer to make sure it supports XP drivers

I would suggest you purchase a XP installation disk at your local retailer if still possible in your area. They are not any more expensive than buying off the net.

If something goes wrong with the disk it would be much easier to deal with the vendor face to face than email to email.

To install XP just insert the disk in the cd/dvd drive and restart

the computer and the installation process will start on its own.

    Changing Operating System?

How difficult is it to change the operating system on a new computer? I would be changing from Vista Home Premium to Vista Business.Changing Operating System?
Almost trivial except for the cost.

The various versions of Vista are only differences in features. So virtually nothing will change except for the features of the business version being added and possibly some of the home version features being removed.

How can i change the operating system of my pc?

i want to keep my original files. ang original settingsHow can i change the operating system of my pc?
It depends on what you have now and what you want to get.

For instance, I upgraded from Windows 98SE to Windows XP Home. I used an upgrade package and kept all my files and settings.

Other than that, I don't anticipate being able to keep your files, etc. Sorry. How can i change the operating system of my pc?
You can't. The files can be kept, but it's tricky and if it's a new OS, they'll probably be gone...You could however do a dual boot setup. I can help you with that if you want. How can i change the operating system of my pc?
    Need more info....

What do you have now and what do you want to install.?

Assuming you have Windows 98 now and you want to install xp, it will coexist on two diff. drives but not on the same unless you partition it. This is because 98 is FAT file system and XP is NTFS file system. XP will read your old files, no problems.

To partition, go to Mycomputer -%26gt;disk manage and go from there........or, go to help file and get step by step instructions under create partition.

Or, try Partition Magic. It is very smooth.

If you partition, you will be into a dual boot option. Everytime you start the computer, it will present you with an option which os you want to use.

If you just drop in your XP, it will erase old files, reformat to NTFS. If you want that, back up old files and just install XP. It will read all your old files without problem.

  • Blue screen of death on shutdown. (windows vista/7) before and after operating system change and reboot.?

Well on the 20th of October we got gizmo to come along and upgrade our ram from 2 gig to 4 gig.

Also i dont know if this has anything to do with it but at that time i still had the now old vista home premium service pack 1.

Also it was a dell dimension 9200

Two days later (22nd October) my internet disconnected so i decided to shut down the computer and turn it on again to reconnect to the internet. But once i clicked shut down i waited for about 10 minutes but it did not shut down. It just stayed on the shutdown screen. So i decided to turn it off at the tower. It turned off then i booted again and it worked just fine.

Then that night my internet disconnected again so i clicked shutdown once again.

This made it do the same thing (being stuck on the shutdown screen) This time i did not shut it down i just waited... after 20 minutes boom Blue screen of death for about 5 seconds then it rebooted.

Once it rebooted i typed in my password then clicked login and boom a black screen with the white cursor but if i pressed alt control delete i could still access task manager and there were about 4-6 tasks running.

No mater how many times i booted i got the same result.

So the next day we bought windows 7 (the day it was released) 23rd October (bundled with a tv tuner incompatible with windows 7)

I formatted that hard drive using the windows 7 setup disc then i installed windows 7.

Later that day the computer with windows 7 installed did that same booting with white cursor and black screen and access to task manager but nothing else. But it did not do the bsod on shutdown.

Then now an exact week after my bsod on shutdown its happened again.

Windows 7 shut down after 15 minutes but just before it finished it showed the bsod and then rebooted without permission. When it rebooted the black screen and white cursor problem did not occur but whn i successfully loged in a message from windows appeared saying this :

The blue screen of death, also known as the blue screen of doom or simply blue screen, is one of the most notorious error messages in Windows based operating systems. To fix blue screen errors, you can safely assume that there's something going seriously wrong in your operating system. Unfortunately for us, and even the highest trained computer technicians, fixing the blue screen of death isn't always as simple as we'd like it to be, and it can take an obscure amount of PC knowledge to get to the root of the problem.

You're blue screening because your windows xp hard drive is loading drivers for the xp machine. It thinks it's in the old computer and can't find the components you had installed.

You have to reformat and install windows and it should work. Keep in mind that the hardware inside Vista computers might not have XP drivers available so you may lose some functionality (i've had it before where I've done this and the wireless card doesn't work because the drivers are made for vista not xp).

think it is gone forever. If you blanked the drive to install Vista and I would imagine you did as part of the install procedure, then the only option is to look to use some data retrieval tools which might pull back some data. Can geek squad change my operating system to XP from vista?

i'm thinking about buying a new gateway laptop, i don't want to have vista on it though, my dad's laptop has vista and i don't like it. so i was wondering, if i buy a new laptop then can i take it to geek squad at my best buy near me and can they change the operating system? if you know, about how much would it cost if they can?Can geek squad change my operating system to XP from vista?
You can do it on some notebooks. If you really want to run XP, the short version of how to do it is below. To make sure you can run Windows XP on it, you need to purchase a notebook with Centrino or Centrino Pro technology - as most of the other notebooks today will not work with Windows XP due to driver availability.

The first step is to purchase a copy of Windows XP. With 2 GB or more of RAM, I would recomend Professional due to its memory management, but Home works as well. You will need to purchase the full version, which goes for $199 for Home and $299 for Professional.

Next, create the recovery CD for your laptop. Gateway notebooks come with an OS DVD, but you will need to have the Drivers and Applications DVD (which you must make seperately) for your computer if you ever need to go to Vista in the future (which you will).

Using the Windows XP CD, boot off of it and load the operating system. After this, download and install all of the drivers for your computer. Gateway will not supply these, so you must think out of the box to do it. Intel will have many of them available, but you may have to get some from Dell or other manufacturers to get the rest of the computer working. You will want to have a second computer and a flash drive to do this - some of it is trial and error.

After ALL of this, you then need to go purchase a DVD player (WinDVD, PowerDVD or similar) to play DVDs. Burning software such as Sonic or Nero to burn CDs and DVDs, and some photo management and video editing software to replace what was already there on Vista. This will run you between $150 and $200.

If you want The Geek Squad to do the OS loading for you (and the really hard part, figuring out the drivers) it will cost you $129 for carry in a physical location (inside of a Best Buy, stand alone or other location).

So with a total cost of $350-$630, you end up with Windows XP on it.

The better question is, why do you want to load XP on it? Unless you have a specific incompatible program that you can't live without, it's really not worthwhile. Windows Vista has a lower failure rate, a lower error rate, uses less power and given sufficient hardware (which you will probably have) will run faster after it has been allowed to optimize itself (leave it on overnight one night a week for a month). Also, going forward, you will need to change to Vista anyway if you want to continue using newer and newer acessories and hardware.

At the end of the day though, it's your computer and your money. Can geek squad change my operating system to XP from vista?
Yes they can! However comma it will cost you and the price isnt worth it. Ensure you have Service Pack 1, its not perfect yet but it has many fixes. Unless most of the applications you have are XP friendly and not Vista compatible then going back in time would be worth it, but if not, stick with Vista and again, Service Pack 1--Service Pack 2 is brewing. Can geek squad change my operating system to XP from vista?
Sorry, but service pack 3 resolves a lot of hardware compatible issues, both for Windows XP and Windows Vista. Computer wise try to find a manufacturer that still offers Windows XP. How do i change system from linux to windows?

Ive got an acer aspire net book with a linux operating system would like to change to windows so my net book more compatible and i can use it for my uni work .but haven't a clue how to do this any advice ?How do i change system from linux to windows?
It seems you will have 2 problems from what I see from the acer specs. It does not have an optical drive, and the memory may be a problem for vista and windows 7.

You can attach an external optical drive to solve the first problem.

The vista specs say it needs 512 MB ram and that is what the acer has; just enough. It also says it needs 20 GB of hard drive space. So that limits you to XP

I actually recommend against installing Windows on your netbook as it will run slower and you still won't be able use a lot of Windows software (the only advantage of running Windows on any machine) on it due to the limited resources on the machine.

That being said if you have your heart on running Windows you will need a USB CDROM and a legal copy of Windows XP (I don't suggest running Vista or Win7 (at least till Win7 is in production)). You install Windows the same way you install Windows regularly on any laptop. Put the CD in the CDROM and reboot, then follow the instructions. How do i change system from linux to windows?
You gotta partition your hard drive, and install Windows, and dual boot, choosing which OS you want to use on startup, a good program for this is none other than: http://gparted.sourceforge.net/

I'm not familiar with the Mac OS X, I want to change it to Windows XP. How do I do it if it's possible. Thanks...Can I change the operating system of my Apple Power Book G4 from Mac OS X to Windows XP?
Not with a G4. Intel-based Macs can boot Windows with Boot Camp, but not the G4 series. You can try using Virtual PC (free download from microsoft.com), VMWare or Parallels to create a virtual Windows machine within your Mac. You'll need a copy of Windows, and you install it on the virtual machine. That's the closest you can get with that chip. Can I change the operating system of my Apple Power Book G4 from Mac OS X to Windows XP?

If you dont care about any data on it or programs, just put in the XP CD and reboot, press any key when it says, then off you go. delete all partitions and create a new one, format it (quick will do) and off you go.

Before deleting everything and while you have the internet, get at least the driver for your network card or modem so once youre in XP you can get straight on the net and download all your other drivers.

If you want to keep anything that's on it make sure you back it up to CD or DVD or and external drive first. What is the procedure to change my operating system from windows vista to windows xp give the steps to change?

Use windows xp if u have your motherboard driver CD, because it requires drivers CD. The Steps are as follows:

Insert windows xp cd in the Optical drive. Now restart the computer.

When it is prompted to Press any key to boot from CD press Enter or space bar.

If not prompted, restart the computer and press the appropriate key to go to BIOS. If u have Intel original motherboard, press F2, if u have IBM branded pc then press F1 or Esc, or if u have mercury board press Del key to enter setup.

Now when it shows the available previous partitions in the hard disk, select the drive where Operationg system is available. Now press Enter.

Now quick format the drive with NTFS file system.

After all this just follow the instructions provided on the screen.

How would I pull off an operating system change like this?

Basically, I have a laptop that came pre-installed with Windows Vista, and I also have an upgrade disk to Windows 7. An option on the Windows 7 disk is to do a clean in-stall of 7, without copying setting and the such over from Vista. What I'm want to do is install Windows 7, and move (or copy) the partition with Vista on it over to another harddrive, so that I don't have two operating systems on the computer. Does anyone have any idea if this would be possible, or how I would pull off copying the entire partition containing Vista? How would I pull off an operating system change like this?
pretty sure that isn't possible. you can install windows 7 and have it move all the files from your vista operating system to a separate folder, and copy those files somewhere else, but the operating system wont boot. How would I pull off an operating system change like this?
Either option will get rid of Windows Vista altogether, and it's really hard to go back even with the original install/recovery disks. You will never have two versions of Windows after you upgrade. You don't need to do any copying/deleting. In Installation, just select custom, and select the partition that Vista is installed on, and Windows 7 will completely erase everything on that partition. How would I pull off an operating system change like this?
Just backup your documents and such and do the full install of Win 7. what will happen is you will have the option to do the custom install and then you format the harddrive wiping everything and then installs Win7.

You can't. You need to buy a legal copy of XP and to install it.How can i change my operating system from me to xp for free?
Unfortunately, I cant give you the answer that you'd like but perhaps this will help. Because of the way Microsoft sells it's Operating Systems, you're almost forced to purchase it on the retail market and you can easily find it at places like Staples. The only other way that I could suggest is by taking the computer to a repair shop (which always has Microsoft Certified Techs) and have them to load the new OS for you. Normally they'll do it for a small charge. Hope this helps, LarryHow can i change my operating system from me to xp for free?

get a pirate disc from e-bay. check your resources will run it. Be aware that if you go online a lot, Microsoft will detect the copied software and flag your system with a 'counterfit copy' warning. If you can live with that popping up, problem solved. Don't like the linux option. Still too complicated to get running perfectly, too many device driver issues on less common devices, and not enough decent games. You cannot, for many reasons.

you cant get it free, if your computer is old time to buy a new one with XP already installed as many of the devices in your computer wont work cause no XP drivers exist, I did a legal upgrade about 5 years ago had to buy many new pieces of hardware as it wasnt supported for xp. you can buy a discontinued new computer for 3 to 4 hundred a bargainHow can i change my operating system from me to xp for free?
First problem - XP is a commercial product, you need to pay for it.

Second problem - An old machine is going to struggle to run it.

Third problem - If it will run XP it's unlikely to run the games well.

Solution - Install a lightweight version of Linux and everything's free.

I'm going to be honest with you. When you un-install Windows 7 and download Windows XP you're going to discover that you'll also have to download all of the XP updates, to include SP1, SP2 and SP3. This will take hours and hours to do.

I really would suggest you not do it. There are several security advantages that Windows 7 has over XP and, as you are using a netbook (used mostly for the internet) you'll really need this added security for web browsing.

It would be better if you were to upgrade your Windows 7 Starter.

In addition to the first two answers you may also want to make sure the laptop meets the minimum hardware requirements (CPU speed and RAM amount) for Windows XP, or the recommended hardware levels or above for optimal performance.

Back up all of your data. Re-format your hard drive, eliminating all of your OS's. Then install XP. You do need a valid Product Key and an installation disk. If I were you, I'd install Vista after XP again just so if you need to, you can dual boot. XP must be installed before Vista to dual boot. I'd also recommend the beta for Windows 7. It runs using the speed of XP, but has the aero look of Vista. Apply for beta testing and download the OS into a CD. Then install it.How do I change my operating system from vista to XP?

You can get an upgrade disc from Microsoft. You might be able to download it directly from them. However you get it, make sure you get an upgrade disc, not a full installation (it will be cheaper, and it should save all of your previous data) If you are using a machine that has ME on it, don't be tempted to move to Vista. Chances are, your hardware won't run it. Make sure to back up your files onto a thumb drive or external drive or cd before doing so...just in case. If you do decide to buy an upgrade disc here's a good place to buy: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16837116196

It depends on your computing ability and the ease of installing that specific operating system. From experience, installing Windows 7 seems to be very easy; make sure you follow the instructions which are printed on the Microsoft website and print them out so you can refer back to them if something goes wrong during the installation.

Windows 7 isn't an official release just yet. It's available as a time-limited %26quot;release candidate,%26quot; which will give you time to try before you buy...

Typically, upgrading an OS differs from installing an OS in that your files, folders and %26quot;personal%26quot; data are preserved during an upgrade. Stick with Vista for now. Dont attempt to alter operating systems unless you have done a course on Microsoft Development and stuff. It isnt for the unsure to mess about with.

Windows 7 will come along when its ready so wait for it to be fully tested before going for it. Vista is a big learning curve up from XP anyway so its a good step up for you.How easy is it to change an operating system?
Normally the biggest issue with changing an OS is compatibility issues with other programs. When Vista was first released there were tons of issues with Compatibility, and some still exist. I wouldn't get Windows 7 until it's released officially, and probably not until they put out a Service Pack for it, or a full year goes by, whichever is first.

    Just install XP.

Boot from your XP installation disc and follow the onscreen instructions. If you had a particular problem when you tried to install XP, I'd be happy to try to help you, but you didn't mention any specific problems.

According to a Google search I just did though, Yahoo! Messenger does run on Vista. I've never used the program, so I can't confirm that from personal experience though, but I imagine such a popular program as that would, indeed, have a version that works on Vista.

EDIT: ikaros, if OP wants to install XP, OP wants to install XP and I think we should do everything we can to help OP. I agree as much as the next person that installing XP merely because he/she got a misleading error message is akin to trying to kill a housefly with a cannon (ie. total overkill), but OP has made his/her wishes clear. If OP asked for help with an Atari 2600, I doubt anybody would criticize him/her for using old technology.

First, you have to obtain a liscensed copy of XP (you might consider getting Windows 7, but I haven't tried it yet.) Insert the Windows XP disk in your CD/DVD drive. It should start automatically. When it gets to the point where your options appear, choose %26quot;Format Hard Drive%26quot;. Note, this option will erase your hard drive, so be sure to back up all personal files and data before starting. Once the hard drive is formatted (this will take some time depending on the size of the drive) continue on using the install wizard to install Windows XP. Once completed, you may have to go to Settings and reinstall certain drivers for your hardware. How can I change Vista operating system to Windows Xp?
    %26quot;can't do this because of Vista operating system.%26quot;

Your assumption is incorrect, Vista is NOT the problem, period. Yahoo Messenger runs on any well maintained version of XP, Vista, and Windows 7, without a single glitch. The REAL reason, I suspect, is your PC is infested with Malware.

And, switching from one OS to the other will not make a 'lick of difference', but, a full Vista Clean Install, or, Vista Recovery, will remove all Malware. Then, YIM will work EXACTLY as it should.

TIP: Read your PC's User Manual to learn how to BURN your Vista Recovery Disks, and, how to return it to %26quot;Factory New%26quot; condition. How can I change Vista operating system to Windows Xp?
Yahoo Messenger should run on Vista without an issues. I suspect the problem is with the MEssage install, not with Vista.

If you want to switch to XP, you will need to start by purchasing a copy of XP. Around $150. Microsoft no longer makes or sells XP, so good like finding a copy.

Because the switch from Vista to XP is considered by Microsoft to be a downgrade, the installer will not let you do that. You have to first remove Vista by deleting the partition that holds it, creating a new one, and formatting it with NTFS. This will permanently wipe all your data (music, pictures, videos, documents, saved e-mails, etc.) and all your installed programs.

You will also need to confirm that there are XP drivers for your computer before you consider the change to XP. Otherwise you will not have audio, good video, network connection, etc, once the conversion is done.

It might be easier to detail the issues you are having with Messenger and we may be able to tell you how to resolve the issue. You might also want to try a free program called Trillium which allows you to access Yahoo Messenger as well as AOL, MSN, and a couple other messengers all at the same time from a single program. That would allow you to use Yahoo Messenger without having to install the actual program. How can I change Vista operating system to Windows Xp?
